Be Media Smart: The Digital Media Short Course – Nov 22, 6.30 to 7.30pm

Hosted by Media literacy educator Ricardo Castellini da Silva, this webinar was designed to support secondary school teachers who are interested in or involved in teaching the Digital Media Literacy short course. The webinar explored the 4 strands of the curriculum specification, looked at some best practices in media literacy and presented resources to assist teachers with their teaching practice.

Be Media Smart: Check the Facts  – Nov 7, 6 to 7pm

We hear a lot about fact-checkers, but do you really know what they do? Or how important their work is?

The spread of disinformation is a growing concern and it is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish fact from fiction. In an age where we are overwhelmed by content varying in accuracy and credibility, fact-checkers work on the frontline in the battle to protect the integrity of information. But what exactly do they do and how does their work benefit all of us? In this webinar, Stephen McDermott from The Journal joined Dr Ricardo Castellini da Silva to discuss the role of fact-checkers in our society, explore what is involved in their everyday work, and provide the public with some tips to distinguish between fact and fiction.

This event, jointly hosted by Making Sense of Media and Media Literacy Ireland and supported by Ofcom and Coimisiún na Meán, explored the process, practicalities and potential of evaluating media literacy initiatives. Speakers included Dr. Vicky O’Rourke, Senior Lecturer, Atlantic Technological University, Dr. Jim Barratt, freelance research and evaluation consultant and Dr. Diego Martinez postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Media and Communications of The London School of Economics and Political Science.
